Jason W. Selby, Press News  Mason City dentist Jay Lala in the building that once housed Emerson s on Main. Lala is restoring the structure and opening a satellite office in Osage. The longtime Mason City dentist, after 28 years in the business, is expanding his practice to Osage. When his friend Ken Emerson decided to move his clothing store across Main Street, it provided Lala with an opportunity to gather more patients under his care. If there is one word Lala would use to describe the dental arts, it is “fun.” He is known for his vast wardrobe of Hawaiian shirts; after getting married in Hawaii, his wardrobe has grown by 150, because they are comfortable, he says, and he does not need to tuck them in.

Waterloo Leads The Way In Iowa Property Forfeitures

Waterloo’s high rank comes in a state that received a ‘D-’ rating for its civil forfeiture laws in 2013 from the Institute of Justice, a libertarian nonprofit in Arlington, Virginia. Iowa’s grade was based on factors such as no former conviction being required, poor protections for third-party property owners and that 100% of profits go toward law enforcement, the institute says.

Drugs Found in Squad Car

Posted by scottsuhr on Waterloo Police are investigating a baggie with drug residue found in a squad car, according to the Waterloo Cedar Falls Courier. An officer beginning his shift found the baggie with leaves or seeds inside as he inspected the vehicle as is protocol. Major Joe Leibold says the baggie was likely left behind by a suspect. They will review video footage to determine who left the baggie behind. Leibold says it is rare that this sort of thing happens because officers are instructed to carefully inspect their vehicles before and after every shift.

$4.1 Million police technology deal approved by Waterloo City Council

WATERLOO, Iowa (KWWL) - Waterloo City Council passed a technology deal with Axon for $4.1 Million for police body and cruiser cameras. Axon and Waterloo Police Department made a 10-year-agreement that would cover new body cameras, evidence management system, in-car cameras, VR training, auto-transcription and redaction assistant services for video. The main source of funding for this 10-year multi-million deal is expected revenue from city traffic cameras. City council and public members all voiced in some way favoring the new deal allowing more accountability amongst police officers and citizens. Maj. Joe Leibold repeatedly reminding council the current body cameras do work but are vastly outdated from when they were first purchased by Safefleet in 2015.
