Top 10 local stories of 2020

COVID-19 rocks region Historically, the Times Herald polls staff on the top 10 stories of the year to compile the list. This year, however, the poll only included places 2 through 10, as there was no question to what the top story of the year would be — the COVID-19 pandemic. SARS-CoV-2, better known as COVID-19 or coronavirus, was first reported in China in December 2019. The first local mention of the disease was published in the Times Herald on Jan. 27, with health officials reporting they were trying to prepare for the disease if it came to the area. 5 things to know about new Wellsville Business Park

WELLSVILLE Curt Crandall called it making lemonade out of lemons.  With the news last week that the massive Siemens Dresser Rand facility in Wellsville is being repurposed as the Wellsville Business Park, and actively recruiting new tenants, the Allegany County Board of Legislators Chairman said the site may soon return to its position as a job creator for the region.  “It wasn’t long ago everybody was wondering what is it we’re going to do with this facility?” Crandall said. “This facility has a long history in Allegany County for manufacturing and providing jobs. It has been an integral part of our history in Allegany County. With this move and positioning it like this, it looks like it will remain an integral part of Allegany County and beyond. It really has the potential for a regional impact in New York state and northern Pennsylvania.”

Wellsville's former Dresser-Rand facility to be repurposed

WELLSVILLE — The village, town and Allegany County received a big, early Christmas present Friday when it was announced that the Wellsville Business Park has taken over the former Dresser-Rand facility. In a Zoom press conference Friday, Allegany County Development Director Craig Clark was joined by more than 25 people who were eager to hear from the new owners of the facility — partners Allen Knauf and Joe Meindl of Rochester. Clark said that his office has been working with the partners for about a month concerning the 400,000 square feet of factory and 50,000 square feet of office space at the former Dresser facility, which has been vacant since April.
