A ‘get-out-of-jail’ card for cowboy developers
Once again, Malta’s cowboy contractors have been given a get-out-of-jail-free card. And there is nothing ‘just’, or ‘fair’, about that

There can be no doubt that the lenient sentence handed down to two architects – found guilty of causing the death of Miriam Pace on 2 March 2020 – was a slap in the face of those who expected justice from this case.
Pace, a 54-year-old mother of two, was buried under the rubble of her own Santa Venera home: which collapsed due to excavation works carried out next door. Moviment Graffitti described the decision as being handed down by the “Courts of Injustice”, saying that it reflects how Malta completely disrespects the value of human life. It added that the sentence sends a message to developers saying that they can do whatever they want. ....

The Chamber of Architects will not take any disciplinary measures on the points already decided upon by a criminal court against the two architects found guilty of having caused the house collapse that killed Miriam Pace, in Santa Venera.
The Chamber said that as a regulator of the profession with the power of a quasi-judicial body, it was unable to institute action on the same charges the two architects were already found guilty of. ....
