Vivian Lee, FAIA, the New York studio Executive Director, joined the firm in February, a week before the city closed down. Maureen Boyer, AIA, was appointed to the same position in San Francisco in July, while Christiana Kyrillou, AIA, the Woods Bagot veteran, has risen through the ranks and opened the LA studio at the beginning of the year. In an exclusive interview with ArchDaily, the three architects discuss their design inspirations and challenges, as well as what it s like to practice today.
Why did you each choose to study architecture?
Christiana: I grew up in a small village in Cyprus with traditional homes, some of which were made of mud bricks. As a kid I would go around the neighborhood looking at buildings with my scale and my pencil, and try to capture them on a piece of paper. How To Use and Reuse Chimneys in Architecture

Francis D. K. Ching [1] characterizes a chimney as an “incombustible vertical structure, which contains a duct through which smoke and gases from a fire or furnace are pushed outwards and through which an air current is created.” While its pipes can be hidden in walls or other structures, the chimney top usually remains prominent in order to transfer dangerous gases from the inside out without dirtying the interior or harming the health of the occupants. Being vertical elements, there are chimneys that become major landmarks in the urban landscape, especially in industrial projects. At the time of drawing, deciding on the “weight” that the chimney will have in a project is essential. At Casa Milá, for example, Gaudí crowns the building in sinuous and curvy sculptural chimneys. In other cases, the solemnity of the building aesthetic is mirrored in its chimney, whereas in others, the architects render the chimney as hidden as possible. Recently, too, many chimneys ....

“Welcome to Birmingham,” proclaims the proud sign that straddles the newly disoriented Birmingham-Worcestershire border. Most people who live around these parts, like me, willingly go back and forth past this sign without a passing thought as they go to work, do their weekly shop, or – heaven forbid! – go for a pint.
Since England’s lockdown was replaced by a convoluted tier system, this edge of Birmingham has been tangled in a web of unbridled bewilderment. Just five yards – three measly strides, to be precise – separates tier 2 Joe Joe Jim’s (joejoejims.co.uk), a games bar, kitchen and live music venue in Cofton Hackett, and tier 3 Old Hare and Hounds (emberinns.co.uk), a country-cum-city pub in Rednal. ....
