45 different offensive categories.
A Cub has led or tied for the National League lead in at least 1 category in
101 of
Hack Wilson led in
17 in 1930; Heinie Zimmerman (1912) and Rogers Hornsby (1929), in 16; Derrek Lee (2005), in 14; and Billy Williams (1972) in 13.
At the other extreme, Walt Moose Moryn and Lee Walls led the NL only once each while with the Cubs tying for most times hit by pitches in 1958, with 8.
Ernie Banks led in WAR (10.2) and defensive WAR (3.5) in 1959, when he was voted Most Valuable Player for the second straight season. But he was only third in offensive WAR (7.8), trailing Hank Aaron (9.1) and Eddie Mathews (8.4). ....

A previous post documented the 10 steals of home by Cubs catchers since 1920.
That post also noted that the Cubs have had exactly 500 steals of any base by their catchers during the entire Modern Era, which began in 1901.
That got me thinking about 2 other positions not usually associated with stolen bases: first base and pitcher.
....
MISSING SPLITS
Finding the number of steals at a specific fielding position for players during the Dead Ball Era proved challenging
Baseball-reference.com does not have career splits by position for many of those, and incomplete splits for others. ....

Last year, I published a 4-part series of posts about the Cubs inside-the-park home runs.
The numbers cited in those posts were obtained using baseball-reference.com s Team Batting Event Finder. But the database that it searches goes back only to 1916.
Now, by examining the individual home run logs of every player who homered at least once for the Cubs from 1901-15, I have documented all of the team s inside-the-park homers the Cubs hit in the first decade and a half of the Modern Era.

It doesn t happen often, but every now and then a Major League umpire apologizes for his behavior.
You may remember Jim Joyce. On June 2, 2010, he called a runner safe at first base, with 2 out in the ninth inning, to deprive Tigers pitcher Armando Galarraga of a perfect game.
After the game ended, Joyce immediately asked to speak with Galarraga.
The 28-year-old Venezuelan was brought to the umpires room,. Before Joyce could say a word, Galarraga hugged him and said, We are all human.
Joyce, crying, apologized to Galarraga in English and in Spanish. ....
