Letters to the editor, May 19

There is a hurry
When I picked up the May 12 edition of the News&Guide my eyes were immediately drawn to a Guest Shot written by Paul O’Brien titled “It’s still a demand problem: Thoughts on northern South Park.” His opinion rings mostly true, but I respectfully disagree with his assertion that “there’s no hurry.”
The housing situation in Jackson Hole has gone from concerning to dire in a matter of months. Real estate prices have risen meteorically, pricing out most doctors, let alone those who have jobs in the tourism industry. In the rental market the effects of this increase in prices are beginning to be felt. As longtime landlords who purchased properties years ago for $100,000 to $500,000 sell to new landlords for $1 million to $3 million, the new landlords are forced by the magnitude of their investment to raise rents dramatically. A bedroom once rented for $800 becomes $1,800. A house that rented for $2,000 a month now fetches $5,0 ....

Humans are a magnificent creation from all that went before, but a paradox; we have the power of conceptuality enabling solving complex problems countered by subconscious emotions that enabled more primitive species to survive extraneous danger, but now disable us as often as not.
Further complicating our condition is the variability of perception. We re all cut out from the same genetic cloth but every person is an island because each has a different neurological makeup and a different method of coping. People react within the context of their conceptualization of existence and their survival strategy. This difference in each brain enabled survival of the fittest inside tribes, but when in competition between tribes survival was achieved by cooperation. ( Nationalism and racism are the culturally nurtured outgrowth of simple tribalism). It is vital to keep in mind the variability of perception in order to keep communication going and to reach common ground. ....

The Storytellers

When I was just a little lad, I asked my mother where I came from. She replied that a stork brought me down from heaven. When my sister was on the way, my mother wisely let me feel the kicks in her belly. I still vividly remember how amazed I was, but do not remember any more of my questions being answered.
That stork story was the start of a cascade of myths penetrating into my mind, each one more sophisticated and appealing in its seeming rationale. That was until I approached maturity and learned the rules of logic where if any of the major or minor premises are false, then the conclusion is false. And if a statement contains a grain of truth but is made out to be the whole loaf, then what follows is mental indigestion - I suppose the discomfort of exploding myths is the price of growing up. I don t like it, but reality based living has its own rewards. ....

Conceptual Ability

Our wonderful conceptual ability enables us to define our unique individuality. To follow that identity leads to an enjoyable life. That is a universal certainty.
For what it is worth, this old man s life continuously expanded the circle of interests, making them wider and wider and more impersonal, until bit by bit the walls of the ego receded, and my life became increasingly immersed into the universal life, like a river moving toward the sea. It is the same broad perspective described by the returning astronauts. They saw self-reflection as the way forward for human survival.
And like the Greek mythology of Sisyphus, or Bill Murray in the movie Groundhog Day, who were condemned to repeat the same thing day after day for an eternity, they and I accept crushing fate without the resignation that one would expect to accompany it, but because of it. The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man s heart. ....
