NOT for the first time, a headline in our Voices section caused some controversy this week. It appeared above Andrew McKie’s column on Tuesday: “The budgets are still big. it’s Hollywood’s imagination and verve that have gotten small.”
There was some spluttering of tea over toast on breakfast tables. Why were we following the American usage of the past participle of the verb “to get”?
The explanation was that it fitted the theme of the piece, which was about Hollywood’s shrinking ambitions, and alluded to a famous line in the 1950 Billy Wilder movie, Sunset Boulevard, uttered by Gloria Swanson’s Norma Desmond. (But it was a misquote. The dialogue actually goes: Joe Gillis – You’re Norma Desmond. You used to be in silent pictures. You used to be big. Norma Desmond – I ....

n Army’s last chance to recover from a two-goal deficit, Peter Dearth readied himself at the block ‘S’. The Black Knights’ James Pryor sprinted back to the 45-yard line, but Dearth, then a Syracuse senior, anticipated the clearance attempt. He lunged, extending his left arm and cradling the one-handed interception to smother any last hope for Army.
Like most games since his shift to defensive midfield, Dearth didn’t register a goal that afternoon. But as he tumbled onto the far-side 40-yard marker, he somersaulted to his feet and evaded Pryor one last time before flipping to Owen Seebold to carry into the attack area. Just over 5,400 fans packed the Carrier Dome, and Dearth’s clutch play, ensuing fist pump and holler at midfield spurned them to their feet. ....

Murray is set to star in a concert production of the musical, which will be performed at Alexandra Palace Theatre. The original dates for the show are currently unconfirmed while uncertainty over restrictions remain, though producers Quick Fantastic say they will be revealing the new schedule this week.
David Cullen and Lloyd Webber s orchestrations will be performed by a 24-piece orchestra in the show, which is directed by Alastair Knights and conducted by Alex Parker (who plays piano in the video above). Paul Smith will supply the sound design. ....

In the spirit of abiding self- delusion, here are five shows I’ll be wishing, and hoping, and praying go ahead, as scheduled
When it comes to predicting the future, I always defer to that old joke about The Big Fella: ‘How do you make God laugh?’ Answer: ‘Tell Him your plans.’
So it is with some trepidation that I make my theatre recommendations for 2021 lest it jinx the year completely.
But in the spirit of abiding self- delusion, here are five shows I’ll be wishing, and hoping, and praying go ahead, as scheduled.
If there’s one production that shouldn’t need divine intervention, it’s surely the musical version of Sister Act, pairing Whoopi Goldberg with Jennifer Saunders. Goldberg, star of the original 1992 film, returns as lounge singer Deloris van Cartier, on the run from the Mafia. Saunders plays the Mother Superior who reluctantly hides her in her San Francisco convent. ....
