Premium Content Google Looks To Turn Data Centers Into Energy Storage By Haley Zaremba - Jan 12, 2021, 3:00 PM CST When most people imagine the internet, the last thing that comes to mind is huge, on-the-ground facilities and thousands of miles of wires across the ocean floor, but even the digital age depends entirely on material things. Even the cloud, whose very name suggests an ethereal, floating datasphere free from servers, towers, and wires, is housed in data centers around the world. And those data centers require energy a LOT of energy. As more and more people get connected to the internet around the world and spend increasingly lengthy amounts of time online, that means that the internet’s energy and ecological footprints are massive and growing. Especially now, when so many people around the world are working online all day before retiring to a relaxing evening online before sleeping next to a phone that is still awake and connected to the inte ....

Published: 18 Dec 2020, 12:13 By: Andy Colthorpe The Google data center in Belgium was the company s first to add on-site solar generation. Image: Google. Google is investing in battery energy storage to serve as a backup power solution at one of its data centres, in a project described as a first step in changing data centres “from climate change problems to critical components in carbon-free systems”. Google’s data centre in Saint-Ghislain, Belgium, was the search engine and web services giant’s first facility to add on-site solar generation, adding a 2.8MW solar array in 2017 to complement various other energy efficiency measures that had already been put in place. ....
Google Looks to Batteries as Replacement for Diesel Generators The blinking lights of racks of Google servers glow in a darkened data hall in St. Ghislain, Belgium. (Image: Google) Google will use large batteries to replace the diesel generators at one of its data centers in Belgium, describing the project as a first step towards using cleaner technologies to provide backup power for its millions of servers around the world. “Our project in Belgium is a first step that we hope will lay the groundwork for a big vision: a world in which backup systems at data centers go from climate change problems to critical components in carbon-free energy systems,” said Joe Kava, Vice President for Data Centers at Google. “We’re aiming to demonstrate that a better, cleaner solution has advanced far enough to keep the internet up and running.” ....
