Berlin. Als Bauarbeiter Ende Februar 2019 bei einer Bohrung an der Salvador-Allende-Brücke in Berlin-Köpenick zwei Starkstromkabel beschädigen, sind die Folgen immens. 30.000 Haushalte und 2000 Gewerbebetriebe stehen rund 31 Stunden ohne Strom da. Zum Glück sind solche Extremfälle sehr selten. Dennoch fällt in Berlin durchschnittlich mehr als einmal pro Tag der Strom länger als fünf Minuten aus. Empty desks, full mail-boxes, and porters watering the flowers. Berlin’s offices lie dormant. People are working from home, where a laptop, WiFi and a VPN connection play vital roles.
The new requirement, for companies to have staff work from home, has been in effect since Wednesday. And, since Wednesday, those exempt from the stipulation, working at insurance companies, architectural offices, call centres and in open-plan offices can expect surprise visits.
