Families of 16 students in Johnson County are suing both the Blue Valley and Olathe school districts.The families want their kids to come to school, and not have to wear masks.Blue Valley’s board of education upheld its mask mandate on Monday. Olathe’s mask mandate remains, too.But parents named in the lawsuit argue their kids should have individual exemptions to mask mandates because it interferes with learning. Right now, special needs students get mask exemptions. Google Maps / Olathe North High School officials placed head baseball coach Pete Flood on administrative leave Friday and recommended he be fired after a Black player’s father said the coach used a racial slur when talking to the teen. The father says the incident happened Thursday before a game. In a Facebook post, he wrote that his son, the team’s only Black player, set up speakers to play rap music while warming up. That makes the masks and social distancing necessitated by the pandemic problematic at times. Teachers in the Independence School District who specialize in deaf and hard-of-hearing education acknowledge this school year has presented some difficulties beyond the norm, but the students generally have been adjusting well. “It’s been challenging; it’s harder to understand the kids,” said Elizabeth Smith, who works with five elementary students, helped by three interpreters in the classrooms. “When a speech pathologist is working with them, they wear a shield. There are times when you can’t stay that far away from them.” ....
