An intensifying Southern Oregon wildfire is disrupting power transmission to California and the Southwest, precisely when it’s most desperately need to keep people cool in the midst of a heat wave.
The Bootleg Fire blew up to nearly 144,000 acres, racing through the Fremont-Winema National Forest’s heavy timber made more flammable by drought conditions. It forced level 2 and level 3 evacuation orders for residents northeast of Klamath Falls to “get ready” or “go now.” The fire’s rapid growth and unpredictability required fire crews to fall back to predetermined safety zones. High temperatures, dry conditions and gusty afternoon winds were expected to continue to drive the fire. And it is leading to a power transmission crisis that is likely to last for several more days, at least, as the fire burns out of control directly in the path of a major interstate transmission line. ....

A raging wildfire in Oregon has doubled in size to 120 squares miles (roughly 311 square kilometers) within 24 hours and now threatens vital transmission lines that carry power to California’s already beleaguered energy grid, the Associated Press reports. It’s one of dozens of blazes scorching the West Coast amid a triple-digit heat wave.
This latest threat to California’s grid the Bootleg Fire sparked in southern Oregon earlier this week before strong winds pushed the flames toward Path 66, a corridor of three parallel 500 kilovolt power lines that connect the two states’ energy grids, CBS SF Bay Area reports. Containment remains at 0%, according to a Saturday update from the Oregon State Fire Marshal’s Office. ....

WASCO COUNTY, Ore. The Wrentham Market Fire has burned an estimated 7,222 acres and is 78% contained as of Friday morning. Evacuation orders remain in place for some homes east of Dufur, according to the Oregon State Fire Marshal s Office.
Officials said the fire destroyed one barn and an outbuilding.
Fire officials previously estimated the fire had burned about 10,000 acres. The change in acreage is due to detailed mapping conducted Thursday. ....
