SALEM, Ore. (AP) A man shot and killed by a Salem police officer on Friday has been publicly identified as 22-year-old Natzeryt Viertel of Salem, authorities said.
The Stateman Journal reports two Salem police officers have been placed on leave, according to Oregon State Police officials.
Reports show police and medics responded at about 5:15 p.m. following reports Viertel had hurt himself.
State police said Viertel allegedly threatened firefighters with a firearm and confronted officers, including Corporal Clinton Sealey, who fired and hit Viertel.
Medics attempted lifesaving measures, but Viertel died at the scene. No one else was hurt. ....

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) The group No More Freeways has filed a lawsuit against the Oregon Department of Transportation’s plan to add auxiliary lanes and shoulders to Interstate 5 by Portland’s Rose Quarter.
The federal government allowed the project to move forward without a full environmental impact statement and the group believes that’s a violation of the National Environmental Policy Act, The Columbian reported Monday.
The $800 million project is aimed at decreasing congestion and traffic accidents on a segment of I-5 between its junctions with Interstate 84 and Interstate 405, but it has faced significant opposition from No More Freeways and other Portland community groups that say the freeway expansion would increase pollution and contribute to global warming. ....

PORTLAND, Ore. (AP) Oregon police on Saturday shot and killed a man they said was trespassing into a Corvallis hotel and trying to get into guests rooms.
A Days Inn hotel employee had told dispatchers that the man was acting aggressively and trying to access rooms that were not his, the Corvallis Police Department said.
The man had a knife, police said. They shot him some time after making contact with him.
The man, a 32-year-old Philomath resident, died at the scene. The police did not detail the circumstances that led to the shooting, the Oregonian reported. They said officers were involved in the shooting but did not say how many fired their weapons or how many shots were fired. ....

SILVERTON, Ore. (AP) A 72-year-old man faces charges including attempted murder for the alleged shooting of his son in a rural area of central Oregon.
The shooting occurred in a rural area near the town of Silverton, about 40 miles south of Portland, according to the Marion County sheriff s office..
Hospital officials notified police Friday night of a patient with multiple gunshot wounds that were not considered life-threatening, KOIN-TV reports.
Police went to a property near Silverton where they met the victim’s father, who surrendered peacefully. He was booked on second degree murder, first-degree assault and unlawful use of a weapon. ....
