Responsibility for one of the most dangerous roadways in Portland could be changing hands from the Oregon Department of Transportation to the Portland Bureau of Transportation.
This is really a critical step in 82nd Avenue, said Don Hamilton, a spokesman for ODOT. We’re going to make some significant changes with the city on this. We have agreed with the city about what needs to be done and agreed about how we are going to go about doing that.
While the agencies are considering this a promising event, those who use the roadway every day aren t celebrating just yet. They want all the proposed changes promised, but they re concerned something could fall through, since the state Legislature needs to put in millions and sign off on it. ....

PORTLAND Two men were struck and killed while walking across the same stretch of Northeast 82nd Avenue in April, a sobering reminder that the east Portland arterial remains one of the most dangerous roads in the Portland metro area.
Fatal crashes, regardless of whether those killed by drivers were walking, in a vehicle or riding a bike, are nothing new on the five-lane state highway that carves through some of the most racially diverse neighborhoods in the city and state and on into Clackamas County. But in the past two years, each marking the deadliest in Portland history since 1996, no one died on 82nd Avenue. In the decad ....

Part of ODOT s plan includes reducing the speed limit from 35 to 30 miles per hour on the busiest stretch of 82nd.

PORTLAND, Ore. The Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) is requesting approval of $3.35 million to make 82nd Avenue safer for pedestrians, the agency announced Friday.
The money would be part of a $10 million plan for urgently needed pedestrian safety improvements statewide, ODOT said in a news release. 
ODOT will ask the Oregon Transportation Commission to approve the funds on May 13. If approved, ODOT says it would quickly launch a series of projects that would be finished by fall 2021.  ....

PORTLAND, Ore. Last month, within a span of two weeks, two pedestrians were struck and killed on Northeast 82nd Avenue within two city blocks: Stephen Looser and Anthony Tolliver.
Now, Oregon Walks, a pedestrian safety advocacy group is demanding the Oregon Department of Transportation (ODOT) place an emergency speed reduction on the road. It s the first in a series of steps that the group says will save lives. ....
