An Emerging Markets Bond ETF for the Weak Dollar World April 12, 2021 Treasury yields are still elevated and the dollar is still weak. However, both assets recently rallied, indicating there’s room to the downside. That could be to the benefit of emerging markets bonds and the EMLC seeks to replicate the price and yield performance of the J.P. Morgan GBI-EM Global Core Index. The index is comprised of bonds issued by emerging market governments and denominated in the local currency of the issuer. While the asset class is currently struggling, there’s still a case for emerging markets debt denominated in local currencies. ....

On March 11, President Biden signed the $1.9 trillion American Rescue Plan Act into law. This comes on the heels of $2.6 trillion in COVID-related spending in 2020. According to the Government Accountability Office, the U.S. national debt hit $26.9 trillion as of September 30, 2020 with the $4.2 trillion increase over 2019 being the highest on record. 1 With this as background, it probably surprised very few people when Bloomberg News recently announced: “Biden Eyes First Major Tax Hike Since 1993 in Next Economic Plan.” 2 Yes, the prospect of higher taxes in our not too distant future is real. Markets at record highs as infrastructure debate begins Thoughts A late surge drove the S&P 500® Index to a record high last week, as economic optimism outweighed valuation worries. Investors worry that we could see elevated equity and bond market volatility in this holiday-shortened week, as large institutional investors rebalance portfolios following a quarter that saw strong equity performance and weak bond returns. Dispersion of performance in the capital markets is wide this year. To date in 2021, the S&P 500 has returned 6%, the Russell 1000 Growth Index is flat, the Russell 1000 Value Index 12%, the Russell 2000 Index 13%, the MSCI EAFE Index 4%, the MSCI Emerging Markets Index 2%, the Bloomberg Barclays US Aggregate Bond Index -3%, High Yield +1% and the 20+Year Treasury -13%. ....
How Rate-Hedged Bond ETFs Became Bona Fide Retirement Strategies April 1, 2021 Rising Treasury yields often prompt advisors and investors to embrace short-term bonds and related exchange traded funds, but there are other ideas to consider, including rate-hedged bond ETFs. The Data confirm the utility of IGH and HYHG in the current environment. “If, for example, 10-year U.S. Treasury yields rose just a half of a percent (still a low rate for 10-year yields), a typical investment-grade bond portfolio with a duration of 10 could see a five percent reduction in total return. And while short-term bond funds are an option to help reduce rate risk, they cannot eliminate it,” according to ProShares research. ....
