“We are giving the report by Human Rights Watch due attention,” Stano asserted. There then followed a lengthy recitation of the EU’s supposed commitment to human rights, international law and to “a negotiated two-state solution”. In pursuit of this ever-receding mirage, Stano concluded that “the EU will engage with both Israel and the Palestinians, and with our international and regional partners to this end.” That sounds suspiciously like the “ constructive engagement” that US President Ronald Reagan and British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher advocated in the 1980s in an effort to stave off international pressure and sanctions on South Africa’s white supremacist apartheid regime. ....
ANALYSIS/OPINION: Human Rights Watch’s recent report matters to anti-Semitic, left-wing and radical Islamic NGOs and press, but to honest people, who are used to the incessant bleating of these “activists,” it’s just more blah, blah, blah (“Human Rights Watch crosses the line with latest attack on Israel,” Web, May 4). Human Rights Watch hired an Arab promoter of Boycott, Divestment, Sanctions (BDS), Omar Shakir, to skewer Israel with libels, such as declaring the Jewish nation an “apartheid state.” In reality, Israel is the only non-apartheid state in the Middle East and North Africa. It is the only state where minorities, women and gays are free to pursue their dreams. Israeli Arabs are equally represented in academia and are slightly over-represented in medical fields. They have members and parties in parliament. An Arab is a Supreme Court justice and another runs Israel’s largest bank. Does this sound like discrimination? ....
Following last week s publication of the report by Human Rights Watch MEMO interviewed the report s author, Omar Shakir, who is the Israel and Palestine director of the Washington based pre-eminent rights group. Shakir has a long history of covering human rights issues. Prior to his current role, he was a Bertha Fellow at the Center for Constitutional Rights, where he focused on US counterterrorism policies, including legal representation of Guantanamo detainees. He also investigated human rights violations in Egypt, including the Rabaa massacre, one of the largest killings of protesters in a single day. A former Fulbright Scholar in Syria, Shakir holds a JD from Stanford Law School, where he co-authored a report on the civilian consequences of US drone strikes in Pakistan as a part of the International Human Rights & Conflict Resolution Clinic. ....

In recent years, we’ve documented the BBC’s amplification of anti-Israel campaigns involving or run by the controversial political NGO Human Rights Watch (HRW) including the FIFA campaign, the Airbnb campaign, and the UN BDS database campaign. Readers may also recall the BBC’s very generous, yet one-sided, coverage of the 2018/19 story of Israel’s non-renewal of the work visa for HRW employee Omar Shakir. due to his BDS-supporting activities. Time and time again, we have documented that although HRW is one of the political NGOs most quoted and promoted in BBC content relating to Israel the BBC has repeatedly failed to meet its own editorial guidelines on impartiality by neglecting to inform audiences of Human Rights Watch’s “affiliations, funding and particular viewpoints.” ....
