A man has died after protesters angry with a total coronavirus lockdown and dire economic conditions clashed with riot police in the Lebanese city of Tripoli for a third consecutive night.
Omar Tayba, 29, was among 220 people injured during the unrest. His brother said he had been shot.
Witnesses and local media reported that police fired live rounds at protesters.
The round-the-clock curfew imposed this month to halt a surge in Covid-19 cases has worsened Lebanon s economic crisis.
People are forbidden from leaving their homes unless they are essential workers, and they must rely on deliveries from supermarkets for food. ....

Lebanon: Funeral held for demonstrator killed in Tripoli protests


More than 220 people were injured on Wednesday evening, which marked the third consecutive night of protests.
Several of those people were injured when security forces opened fire on a group of protesters throwing stones in the city’s Al Nour Square.
Tayba was brought to Nini Hospital around 9:40pm (19:40 GMT) in “very critical condition” having been “shot in the lower back”, the hospital said in a statement which added that he underwent emergency surgery but died of his wounds on Thursday morning.
Later on Thursday, a second protester died from wounds sustained during the crackdown by security forces, the city’s mayor Riad Yamak told Al Jazeera. ....

BEIRUT/TRIPOLI (Reuters) – A man was killed in the Lebanese city of Tripoli on Thursday in clashes between security forces and protesters angry over a strict lockdown that has cut off livelihoods in a collapsing economy.
Omar Taybah, 30, was hit by a bullet overnight, according to a local hospital that treated him, a security source and residents. Dozens marched at his funeral during the day.
Witnesses and local media said police had fired live bullets as protesters tried to storm the northern city’s government building. Scores of people were wounded. ....

Angry crowds gathered outside the Tripoli homes of some of Lebanon s top politicians on Thursday, torching rubbish and smashing surveillance cameras as rage grows over the government s handling of the coronavirus pandemic.
We want to burn down all their houses the way they burned our hearts, said Omar Qarhani, an unemployed father of six.
Let any politician dare to walk on the streets of Tripoli.
The impoverished northern city has seen four days of clashes between security forces and residents outraged by curfew measures they say are destroying their livelihoods. ....
