Cast members of the hit musical, Hamilton are joining locals in Balbriggan to celebrate the visit to the North Dublin town of Frederick Douglass, a famous American abolitionist. African-American Douglass was born into slavery before he escaped and became a national leader of the abolitionist and social reform movement. He became famous for his oratory and anti-slavery writings, visiting Ireland for four months in 1845, during which time he travelled the country giving lectures. The visit, which coincided with the onset of the Famine, was said to have inspired him in his campaign for social justice. Douglass is believed to have passed through Balbriggan on his way from Dublin to Belfast and was likely to be one of the first American tourists to pass over Balbriggan s iconic viaduct, constructed the year before. ....
