CONCERNS OVER DELTA VARIANT OF COVID-19: Experts discuss COVID-19 cases rising as testing declines in Oklahoma, concerns over Delta variant


Experts with the Healthier Oklahoma Coalition on Tuesday discussed the fact that COVID-19 cases are still rising in Oklahoma as testing declines and as the Delta variant makes its way through the Sooner State. Statewide, we re sitting around 6.4% positivity, but, again, in the face of dramatically reduced testing, said Dr. David Kendrick, CEO of MyHealth Access Network and the department chair of medical informatics at the University of Oklahoma School of Community Medicine.Officials with the Healthier Oklahoma Commission said they see an upward trend in COVID-19 cases in the last few weeks as testing declines. Those are days when we were testing thousands a day. COVID-19 is Tulsa County's 5th leading cause of death as public health officials urge safe holiday gatherings


In only 10 months, COVID-19 became the fourth-leading cause of death for Tulsa County residents on Tuesday when the death toll was overlaid on the list of 2018’s top mortality causes, according to the Tulsa Health Department.
The department used 2018 for its novel coronavirus comparison because 2018 is the most recent year for which county mortality data are finalized.
“This virus is very real,” wrote Bruce Dart, the Health Department’s executive director, in a statement. “It is imperative that we take an effective, fact-based approach to stopping this pandemic now.
“The three W’s — wearing a mask, watching your distance and washing your hands — continue to remain paramount to keep ourselves and those we care about safe and around for many more holidays to come.” ....

Medical Leaders Say Vaccine Confidence Increasing Among Oklahoma Health Care Workers

As more and more Oklahoma health care workers receive the first doses of COVID-19 vaccines in the state this week, medical leaders say providers confidence in their safety is increasing.
LaWanna Halstead, vice president for quality and clinical initiatives at the Oklahoma Hospital Association, said on a weekly Zoom press conference organized by the Healthier Oklahoma Coalition on Tuesday that somewhere between 30% and 45% of eligible hospital staff are currently scheduling their shots, up from around 24% who said they d be eager to receive the vaccine six or eight weeks ago.
The effect was because they did not know about the [phase three] trials, Halstead said. Since that s come out, it has really boosted people s confidence. I think that health care workers being, basically, scientific people can see that this is a safe vaccine, and that they are confident that these multi-thousands of people who have been tested have had ....
