“In fire service, no news is good news,” said Frank Macdonald, Saanich’s deputy fire chief. “When things are going really well, you tend not to hear people talking about it, but when things aren’t going well, you hear a lot, and we used to hear a lot of complaints about the quality of communication, or the lack of it.

Storm closes roads, cuts power to thousands on Vancouver Island

More than 10,000 people are still without power on southern Vancouver Island Wednesday afternoon after an overnight windstorm cut power to more than 100,000 people across B.C.
The storm downed trees and power lines, causing more than 22,000 people in Greater Victoria to lose electricity.
Environment Canada says wind gusts topped 100 km/h in the Victoria region.
