YOUNGSTOWN “I was 14 years old when my stepfather shot and killed my mother, and I held her hand while she died,” Mamie Rudoloph told about 100 people inside the Boys and Girls Club on Oakhill Avenue this afternoon.
She was one of four family members of homicide victims who spoke during the “Stop the Violence” rally sponsored by the group Youngstown United As One.
“I was in the ninth grade at Wilson High School, she said of that day in 1988 on Verona Avenue on the East Side. “They argued all day, and then they got into an argument later on at night,” she continued. Mamie and her brother were playing Nintendo in another room. ....

Master Gardener
The Junior Master Gardener program is a 4-H after-school program but is not a 4-H club. The free program is for third- through 12th-grade students.
We generally meet once a week between mid- to late spring through the final harvest and garden cleanup. Our gardens reside in St. Patrick’s Church community gardens at the corner of Oak Hill Avenue and Cleveland Street in Youngstown.
This coming season begins our fourth year. In the past years we have grown tomatoes, peppers, herbs and annual flowers from plants donated to us. We direct-sow from seed some of our vegetables, such as carrots, radishes, cucumbers, beets and green beans. ....

We can already hear the assorted moans, groans, gripes and snipes among irritable motorists attempting to wend their way along Mahoning Avenue in Austintown and Youngstown in the coming months and years.
To be sure, inconvenience will reign supreme as work begins this spring on a series of $8 million-plus repaving and improvement projects along the major artery of Austintown and the city’s West Side. That work will necessitate lane closures, traffic slowdowns and orange barrel-dodging before one of the largest and most significant road-improvement projects in recent years reaches its finish line.
Those nuisances, however, add up to little more than a classic case of short-term pain, long-term gain. The $5 million Austintown project, coupled with multimillion-dollar projects from 2022 to 2025 on the city’s share of the highway, represent a concrete investment in the future of the city’s West Side and its western neighbor. ....

Mahoning Ave. to see improvements | News, Sports, Jobs

YOUNGSTOWN Mahoning Avenue, one of the busiest streets on the city’s West Side, will undergo two significant improvement projects one starting next year, and the second occurring in 2024 and 2025.
The first project goes from Oak Hill Avenue, where the street ends at the Spring Common Bridge and becomes Fifth Avenue, to Meridian Road, the city’s western border with Austintown.
The work includes the replacement of 10 traffic lights as well as sidewalk improvements and new curb ramps in compliance with the Americans with Disabilities Act, said Charles Shasho, deputy director of public works.
The project is estimated at $2,078,093, but the cost won’t be known until the city seeks bids. The money for the work is coming from federal funds, Shasho said. ....
