J.F. Brennan Company Opens Paducah Facility - The Waterways Journal

J.F. Brennan Company has expanded its operations, opening a new Mid-South branch in Paducah, Ky.
Brennan is a fourth-generation, family-owned marine construction firm headquartered in La Crosse, Wis., with additional offices throughout Wisconsin as well as in Illinois, Massachusetts, Rhode Island and Minnesota. It has more than 500 employees.
The new Mid-South location will focus on prevalent infrastructure needs in the Paducah area, including marine and dam construction, harbor management and dive services, said Mark Binsfeld, vice president of business development.

The new site opened February 22 at 6410 Kentucky Dam Road in Paducah. Leading it is Robert “Bob” Wheeler, who joined Brennan from Shimmick Construction Company and was involved in the construction of Olmsted Locks and Dam and the rehabilitation of the Lagrange Lock and Dam. ....

Rock Island District Christens Towing Vessel - The Waterways Journal

The Rock Island Engineer District christened the mv. Quincy at the Clat Adams Bicentennial Park in Quincy, Ill., April 30. Several hundred members of the public attended the ceremony, according to Allen Marshall, Rock Island District public affairs officer. Tours of the boat were offered the previous day and also following the ceremony.  The mayor of Quincy, Mike Troup, spoke at the event, along with Col. Steve Sattinger, commander of the Rock Island District. 
The new vessel is dedicated to the city of Quincy and joins the Mississippi River Structures Maintenance fleet located at the Mississippi River Project Office in Pleasant Valley, Iowa. It serves as the primary towing vessel for the fleet’s new Quad Cities heavy-lift crane barge. It will be responsible for helping to maintain 314 miles of the Mississippi river. ....

Landowner, Corps Differ Over Cause Of Erosion Near Olmsted

Property owners along the Ohio River near Olmsted, Ill., and the Corps of Engineers both agree riverbank erosion is occurring, but they disagree as to its cause.
Sandra Thornton, an Air Force veteran who has rallied her neighbors and begun a letter-writing campaign to the president, members of Congress and the media, among others, is adamant that the replacement of the former Locks and Dams 52 and 53 with the Olmsted Locks and Dam has sped up the erosion, along with the placement of four barge mooring cells and a relocated boat ramp moved due to the dam’s construction. She also believes the propulsion of passing barges has had an effect. ....
