Santa Monica is set to hire Montebello City Manager Rene Bobadilla as the city’s newest City Manager following a vote taken Tuesday night by City Council.
In order to address any timing contingencies, City Council agreed to seek to retain John Jalili as the Interim City Manager for a period of transition. Jalili will then assume responsibility of the position once Interim City Manager Lane Dilg vacates the position until Bobadilla takes the reigns.
Councilmember Gleam Davis originally voted against the hiring but changed her vote to yes in the interest of making sure that Council is united in its desire to see Mr. Bobadilla succeed.  ....

City Council finished its first round of interviews for Santa Monica’s next city manager this weekend, meaning the search for the city’s first permanent manager since Rick Cole resigned in April 2020 could soon be completed.
Council conducted interviews throughout Friday and Saturday, according to a public notice posted on the Council’s agenda. They were held in closed session so little information is available on who the leading candidates are since city leaders have remained mum on the matter in an effort to retain the search’s integrity.
Dilg, who took the reins as Interim City Manager in April 2020, announced her intention to leave the city back in December as her family relocates to pursue other public service ventures. A few months later, Santa Monica City Council unanimously directed staff to retain Lamont Ewell (who managed Santa Monica until 2009) of Ralph Andersen & Associates to searc ....

Main Council considers closing streets this summer - Santa Monica Daily Press

Main Council considers closing streets this summer
Apr. 30, 2021 at 6:00 am
Main Street may be closed to automobile and bus traffic this summer if Council were to approve a proposed pilot program that could boost economic recovery efforts.
Council directed staff to return with a pilot program during its meeting Tuesday that would close the most restaurant-dense areas of Main Street to everything except foot traffic.
The recent changes to Main Street have been a hot topic since the ideas were first conceived at the start of the pandemic. The program to expand outdoor dining has been popular amongst the business community. Local groups like the Ocean Park Association (OPA) have hosted surveys showing positive public opinion, but OPA members are far from the only ones who expressed interest in making al-fresco a permanent feature of Santa Monica. ....

City to explore offleash dog park at Reed - Santa Monica Daily Press

City to explore offleash dog park at Reed
Apr. 29, 2021 at 6:00 am
Reed Park may one day be the site of a neighborhood off-leash dog park after Council directed staff Tuesday to begin exploring the feasibility of such a project.
Councilmember Phil Brock said this week the idea initially came up in 2007 or 2008 in the Recreation and Parks Commission.
“We tried other things there, but every day when I’m on a walk anywhere in north Santa Monica, I see dogs and their owners out, and I get constant discussions about Rosie’s Dog Beach and the fact that there’s not one dog park in north Santa Monica whatsoever,” Brock said, listing the few places around Santa Monica that allow dogs to run freely. “We have no prospects of finding park space in North Santa Monica at all, yet we have a huge number of dog owners so it’s worth exploring.” ....
