Femtosecond hard X-ray pulses are an important tool for unraveling structure changes of condensed matter on atomic length and time scales. A novel laser-driven X-ray source provides femtosecond copper Kα pulses at a 1 kHz repetition rate with an unprecedented flux of some 10^12 X-ray photons per second.
Elementary processes in physics, chemistry, and biology are connected with changes of the atomic or molecular structure on a femtosecond time scale (1 femtosecond (fs) = 10^-15 seconds). Ultrafast X-ray methods hold strong potential for following structure changes in space and time and generate movies of the motions of electrons, atoms and molecules. This perspective has resulted in a strong demand for femtosec ....

Researchers Improve Performance of Light-Based Fiber Optic Sensor

Researchers Improve Performance of Light-Based Fiber Optic Sensor
Written by AZoOpticsDec 22 2020
Scientists have made a significant breakthrough by improving the performance of resonator fiber optic gyroscopes a kind of fiber optic sensor that uses light to sense rotations.
Researchers have incorporated a new type of hollow-core optical fiber known as a nodeless antiresonant fiber to boost the performance of resonator fiber optic gyroscopes. These gyroscopes could one day form the basis of navigation technologies that are more compact and more accurate than today’s systems. Image Credit: Gregory T. Since gyroscopes form the basis of a majority of the navigation systems, the latest study could someday bring significant enhancements to such systems. ....

WASHINGTON Researchers have taken an important new step in advancing the performance of resonator fiber optic gyroscopes, a type of fiber optic sensor that senses rotation using only light. Because gyroscopes are the basis of most navigation systems, the new work could one day bring important improvements to these systems.
High-performance gyroscopes are used for navigation in many types of air, ground, marine and space applications, said Glen A. Sanders, who led the research team from Honeywell International. Although our gyroscope is still in the early stages of development, if it reaches its full performance capabilities it will be poise ....
