The month of May represents the end of the academic year. As the beauty of spring emerges, we experience bittersweet acknowledgments: of the work that remains to be done, the sudden anticipation of goodbyes, and contemplation of life after graduation.
Congratulations and thanks to all for the strength and determination you modeled during the challenging year of 2020–21.

The eight seniors participating in this year’s Annual Senior Thesis Exhibition opening May 7 have produced work that reflects on the ephemeral qualities of humanity, some of it created in mediums chosen in part because of the restrictions of COVID-19, and much of it with heavy emphasis on nature, from its most essential cellular level to the beauty and utility of landscapes.
Fittingly then, these studio art majors’ work in video, animation, ceramics, and photography reflects what life in this academic year has been so far: complex, challenging, and requiring flexibility. But beyond that, what permeates the exhibition is a sense of gratitude. For one thing, these Class of 2021 studio art majors, whose thesis work has been advised during the Winter term by Associate Professor of Art and Visual Culture Pamela Johnson and last Fall by Lecturer Susan Dewsnap, get to have a physical show at the Bates College Museum ....

This Month at Bates

Published on April 27, 2021
Challenged by a surge of COVID-19 cases in early April, the college dug in its heels, implementing 11 days of in-room restrictions for all students.
With an understandable spring in their steps, students sprung from their rooms when the restrictions were lifted, embracing with delight all that April can offer during a pandemic: thesis binding, live theater, athletics, and a beautiful campus heading toward full bloom.

Africana major Joshua Redd ’21 of Brooklyn, N.Y., savors a rite of passage: binding a senior thesis with friends in Ladd Library.
“I felt like all of the work that I’d done towards this moment had finally paid off,” said Redd, whose honors thesis explores the experience of Black students in several New York City charter schools. “I’m just so happy that I got the chance to apply what I’ve learned to a project that I genuinely care about.” ....

The Davistown Museum is a tool, art, and regional history museum with two physical locations in Maine and a website, rich with resources. Its main building is in Liberty, while its office and a sculpture garden are in Hulls Cove (Bar Harbor). The primary mission of the museum is the recovery, display, and interpretation of hand tools used in Maine and New England s maritime culture. It serves as an important clearinghouse for information on the history of hand tools and their roles in the early industries of Maine and New England and offers an extensive exhibit of hand tools in Liberty and online. The Museum also provides a forum for contemporary Maine artists to exhibit their work, creating a unique environment that juxtaposes tools, as both historical and sculptural objects, with a wide diversity of art forms. In addition, the Museum strives to increase community awareness of and to provide access to information on local, regional, Native American, and ....
