Homeless advocates attempt hotel takeover in Olympia

OLYMPIA, Wash. (AP) Days after Bellingham ousted campers from the lawn around City Hall, police in Olympia had their hands full with a large group they say tried to take over a hotel and turn it over to the homeless Sunday.
An Olympia Police spokesman told KOMO News that about 40 people led by the group Oly Housing Now entered the Red Lion Hotel at about 11 a.m. and threatened employees.
He said many of the group were carrying batons or bats, a couple reportedly had large knives and one was wielding an axe.
The group tried to occupy the hotel as guests and staffers sheltered in place for several hours. ....

At least seven people were taken into custody on Sunday as law enforcement cleared the Red Lion Hotel in downtown Olympia, Washington.
Police cleared out a downtown Olympia, Washington hotel after a homeless activist group allegedly forcibly occupied the establishment Sunday to shelter unhoused people, the City of Olympia said in a statement late Sunday night.
At least seven people were taken into custody, according to CNN affiliate KIRO, which said some Red Lion Hotel employees were trapped in the hotel s basement for more than six hours. According to the city s statement, guests in about 40 rooms sheltered in place while police cleared the hotel. ....

An activist group allegedly “forcibly occupied” a Washington state hotel Sunday night as part of a plan to provide housing for homeless people.
The group, Oly Housing Now, told The Olympian that they had purchased 17 rooms at the Red Lion Hotel in Olympia and given them to people living at local encampments.
“It’s too cold for people to be sleeping on the streets especially during a pandemic,” the group said in a statement.
When they arrived at the hotel around noon Sunday, the concierge desk was empty, organizer Emma Deitz told the newspaper. Some activists went upstairs while others stayed downstairs in the lobby. ....

Ten homeless activists were arrested in Olympia on Sunday after the group allegedly occupied a downtown hotel, assaulting at least one employee and prompting guests and staffers to shelter in place for several hours, authorities said.
Olympic Police Department Lt. Paul Lower told KOMO News that employees of the Red Lion Inn & Suites, located at 621 Capitol Way South, began calling for help at 11 a.m. after several people, one of whom was wielding a hatchet while others brandished batons and knives, entered the facility, saying they were taking the hotel over. ....
