As the U.S. experiences a wave of popular concern about social justice issues, publishers are really just beginning to embrace a growing number of works on such topics as ancestral domains and land rights of Indigenous communities; preservation of their languages, traditions, rituals, and cultural knowledge; and, just as important, the reimagining of their lives through the storytelling of contemporary Indigenous authors. CELEBRATING the achievements and commitments of Fermanagh s inspiring youth, the Rotary Club of Enniskillen has hosted Young Citizen Awards, announcing the winners of the awards at a virtual ceremony via Zoom online meetings on Monday (May 10). The awards are held to showcase and celebrate the positive citizenship and important responsibilities assumed by many young people under the age of 25. Nikki Kernaghan (17) was announced as the winner of the Young Sporting Hero award, and Mark West (11) as the winner of the Young Citizen award. The current Girl s Captain of Enniskillen Royal Boat Club, Nikki has overcome grief to focus on training, competing and winning in rowing. She is a skilled team member, developing her leadership skills in helping younger members and coaches alike. ....
May 4, 2021 This week, we hear from one of the co-editors of the first historically comprehensive Native poetry anthology – yes the very first. It’s called When The Light of The World Was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through: A Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry. It was edited by Poet Laureate Joy Harjo with Jennifer Elise Foerster and LeAnne Howe. Organized by geographical region, each section begins with a poem from traditional oral literatures and closes with an emerging poet. Contributors range from Eleazar, a seventeenth-century Native student at Harvard, to Jake Skeets, a Diné poet born in 1991. By Gary Richards THE AMERICAN South arguably has the nationâs most vibrant, celebrated regional literature, and key among its writers are outstanding women, ranging from Harriet Jacobs, Constance Fenimore Woolson, and Kate Chopin in the 19th century to LeAnne Howe, Jesmyn Ward, and Karen Russell in the 21st century. The 20th century is a particularly rich era, and one thinks of a constellation of Southern women writers from this period whose works have become integral to our national literary heritage: Margaret Mitchellâs âGone with the Windâ (1936); Flannery OâConnorâs macabre short stories; Harper Leeâs âTo Kill a Mockingbirdâ (1960); Alice Walkerâs âThe Color Purpleâ (1982); and Dorothy Allisonâs âBastard Out of Carolinaâ (1992). ....
