The power of literature to address the history of the oppression of Indigenous peoples in North America and chart their futures has never been more important. PW contacted a variety of publishers to find out how their programs serve the needs of Indigenous readers and their communities. We spoke with ....

André Naffis-Sahely and LeAnne Howe in… | Poetry Foundation

May 4, 2021
This week, we hear from one of the co-editors of the first historically comprehensive Native poetry anthology – yes the very first. It’s called
When The Light of The World Was Subdued, Our Songs Came Through: A Norton Anthology of Native Nations Poetry. It was edited by Poet Laureate Joy Harjo with Jennifer Elise Foerster and LeAnne Howe.

The 20th century is a particularly rich era, and one thinks of a constellation of Southern women writers from this period whose works have become integral to our national literary heritage: Margaret Mitchell’s “Gone with the Wind” (1936); Flannery O’Connor’s macabre short stories; Harper Lee’s “To Kill a Mockingbird” (1960); Alice Walker’s “The Color Purple” (1982); and Dorothy Allison’s “Bastard Out of Carolina” (1992). ....
