After weeks in the Neonatal Intensive Care Unit, she came home with monitors, oxygen and a full schedule that sometimes included three appointments a day to various therapists and specialists. She did not develop according to typical expectations, but she made progress at her own pace. As a toddler, she learned how to blow kisses, which became her signature move for years. She learned how to walk when she was seven. Through the years, she has pieced together a communication system involving modified sign language, gestures and a communication device with pictures to make herself understood. ....

Adichie and the other remarkable women were chosen for being “Inspiring, memorable and sometimes divisive” and for being the “women who stood out in an unforgettable year” 2020 has been a challenging year for so many across the globe including Chimamanda who is still mourning the passing of her beloved father. On the career front however, it’s been a banner year for the award winning novelist who continues to inspire with her literary works, political and social advocacy. There’s an elephant in the newsroom, and here’s what we can do about it Canadian Media has a problem with the representation of minority groups According to Brent Cunningham in Re-thinking Objectivity, “[the] understanding of ‘the other’ has always been – and will always be – a central challenge of journalism.” The media in Canada at large creates a world of reductive, selective or idealized images of “the other” that misrepresent them by using the experiences of a few people and allowing them to speak for a whole group. Also, the rhetoric used in Canadian media often makes distinctions between majority and minority groups by establishing a sense of ‘us and them,’ which makes minority groups largely invisible and communicates the message that they are not full participants in Canadian society. ....
