Investing in African Mining Indaba 2017 Across the continent, the Africa Mining Vision, adopted by African heads of state in 2009, is gaining momentum with broader development imperatives aimed at integrating mining into industrial and trade policy. As Africa develops, so its sovereign and operating risk will diminish, and its infrastructure will improve. Already the African Development Bank expects growth across African economies to accelerate next year to reach 4.2 percent in 2018. A case in point is Nigeria, which has embarked on a long-term development of its mining sector, targeting $5 billion in investments over the next 10 years under a new industry roadmap. Trafigura bets on green-nickel squeeze in defiance of China cure Just weeks after a novel production method upended the nickel market, two of the top names in the battery-supply chain made a play that suggests the world’s worries over sourcing cheap, clean supplies of the metal are far from over. Commodity trader Trafigura Group and Elon Musk’s Tesla Inc. signed a deal in late March to enter the Goro mine in New Caledonia, part of a group that will take the operation off the hands of Vale. The transaction wasn’t a surprise, with Vale in talks to offload the under-performing mine for months. But the deal’s timing was telling. ....

The first keynote address of this year’s Prospectors and Developers Association (PDAC) of Canada convention was particularly germane given that PDAC is the world’s largest mining conference, most publicly listed mineral companies are Canadian, and the majority of these have gold mining operations. The talk, entitled The fate of gold deposits, was delivered by Douglas Silver, CEO of Flydentity LLC. He explored global gold endowment over the past 30 years. Silver said the idea for the talk started when he asked the question “What happened to the gold deposits of 1989?” during a keynote speech in 2019 at the 30th anniversary of the Denver Gold Group, which he founded in 1989. ....
