St. Landry Real Estate Journal had a short run | Parlons Opelousas While doing research for a book I am trying to complete, I ran across some new information regarding the newspaper history of Opelousas. As I’ve shared in a number of other Parlons articles, Opelousas is known as the Graveyard of Newspapers since so many papers opened and closed in our town over the decades. Well, last week I discovered another paper buried in that graveyard. Let’s talk about that. In April of 1881, when the Louisiana Press Association sent out an announcement with a list of all newspapers in Louisiana, three of those papers were located in Opelousas the Opelousas Courier started in 1852, the St. Landry Democrat started in 1878 and the St. Landry Real Estate Journal started in 1879. From this announcement, it seems Opelousas once had a newspaper called the St. Landry Real Estate Journal. According to information I recently discovered, that short-lived paper published from abou ....
Since I was a child I’ve been interested in the history of Opelousas. My curiosity about the stories I heard from my mom, my aunts and my grandmother led me to the St. Landry Parish courthouse when I got older, and eventually to other areas to do research on our town using anything available for more information. I especially like to learn how businesses got started, what were the first businesses in town and who were the first professionals. I even wrote a book called Opelousas Firsts. Since that time I’ve learned so much more about some of the first known businesses as well as those that followed. Today, I want to share what I learned about the early jewelers in Opelousas with a focus on Dietlein Jewelry Store that operated over a century ago. ....
Recently I’ve seen more interest in our local history. Topics that come up from time to time are stories about Reconstruction following the Civil War, and the events of the late 1860s in Opelousas. Those years of Reconstruction were a troubling time in our history. For over a decade Opelousas saw a lot of unpleasantness. Politics became toxic, filled with horrible name-calling and hurtful speech. This led to the Opelousas Massacre of September 1868. Parlons discussed a part of this story recently in an article about the St. Landry Progress newspaper of that time. But there is much more to this story since the effects of that 1868 incident lasted for many years. ....
I’m in the process of completing another book for the Opelousas Tales Series that will focus on the newspaper history in Opelousas. Our town has seen the creation of more newspapers than most other small towns across America. So many that Opelousas is known as the Graveyard of Newspapers. While reviewing the materials I’ve collected over the last 40-plus years of researching this subject, I feel an important paper to the history of our town is one that was almost forgotten. Let’s talk about the St. Landry Progress. Studying the history of newspapers in Opelousas you’ll come across two named the St. Landry Progress one created in the 1800s and one created in the 1900s. Both were short-lived for different reasons. The St. Landry Progress of 1916, owned by Richard Price and Lawrence A. Andrepont, published by Louis Hebert, was first issued in December 1916. The last edition was in February 1917. ....
