ABL Space Systems Lands 58-Launch Deal from Lockheed Martin


Lockheed Martin has purchased a block of launches on
ABL Space Systems RS1 rocket of up to 26 vehicles through 2025, and up to 32 additional launches through 2029. Financial terms of the deal were not disclosed in the April 5 announcement. 
ABL Space Systems, based in El Segundo, California, just closed a $170 million Series B funding round last week, at a $1.3 billion valuation. The company is developing the RS1 launch vehicle and GS0 deployable launch system, a containerized system that is designed to provide rapid launch from new launch sites in the U.S. and around the world. RS1 is capable of delivering up to 2,976 lbs to Low-Earth Orbit (LEO). ....

According to Lockheed Martin the first satellite launched from the UK will be used to collect data from space that will help drive growth across the country .  
The application contains a proposal for a launch site on the Lamba Ness peninsula on Unst, with various site buildings. 
Around 140 jobs would be created at the launch site and a further 70 throughout Scotland if given the go ahead, bringing £7.8million gross value per year to the nation s economy, The Herald reports. 
In its decision HES said it had noted the profitable benefits of the site but said there was no compelling case for it to be built on the culturally significant location.     ....

Scots nature agency s concerns for seabirds from space centre plan
Scotland’s natural heritage agency has raised concerns for important seabird colonies from a proposed space centre in Shetland.
NatureScot is to insist that managers of the proposed spaceport in Shetland does not carry out rocket launches during the breeding season fearing that without that protected populations on the island of Unst could disappear.
The plan is for the space centre to be be used by Lockheed Martin s UK Pathfinder satellite launch system and it would enable up to 30 launches per year.
It follows the UK Space Agency approving Lockheed Martin’s plan to use a £23.5m grant to move its UK Pathfinder Launch to the most northerly inhabited island in Scotland as part of the UK’s spaceflight programme. ....
