Promises to extend free school meals, to double the new child payment or to introduce an NHS spending escalator are all worthy pledges. What is there not to like? But presented as they often are by each party – more money for the NHS, more money for schools or tax cuts for the economy – such manifesto commitments only ever offer a partial picture of the policy challenges facing whoever forms the new government after May 6.

LIBERAL Democrat candidate for Shetland Beatrice Wishart has called on the Scottish Government to provide urgent clarity around future coronavirus restrictions in the islands.
It has been a month since first minister Nicola Sturgeon announced plans to ease restrictions on the Scottish mainland from 26 April.
At the same time, she confirmed that the Scottish Government would consult islanders on how to ease restrictions in the islands, with a trade-off including a travel ban mooted.

âEvery day without clarity is another damaging day for businesses. Folk in Shetland are yet to see any clarity from the Scottish Government on what it intends to do,â Wishart said.
