United sets board leadership for '21 | News, Sports, Jobs

The board re-elected Wendy Doyle as president and elected Denise Rhodes as vice president.
Also at the meeting, the board appointed the following: Doyle as delegate and Rhodes as alternate delegate to the OSBA Annual Conference; RuthAnn Rinto as OSBA legislative liaison; Rinto as acting board secretary at board meetings if treasurer is absent; Justin Medure as PTO liaison; Heather Mercer as United Community liaison; Mercer as student achievement liaison; Medure and Rinto for Athletic Council; Doyle and Treasurer Melissa Baker for Audit Committee; and Medure and Rhodes for Building and Grounds Committee.
The board also appointed former board member Mike Ellyson as Columbiana County Career and Technical Center board representative for a two-year term expiring Dec. 31, 2022, but reserved the right to change the appointment length to one year based on feedback from the career center. United BOE approves readiness seals | News, Sports, Jobs

The board approved seals for community service, fine and performing arts and student engagement.
As part of the new Ohio graduation requirements and in alignment with the “Readiness” component, students will be required to earn two Readiness Seals that will be affixed to their diploma and official transcript. The current sophomore class will be required to earn the seals, but juniors and seniors will be able to earn the seals, as well.
In addition to the nine state-defined seals (Ohio Means Jobs, Biliteracy, Industry Recognized Credential, College-Ready, Military Enlistment, Citizenship, Science, Honors Diploma, and Technology), districts must develop guidelines for at least one of three locally defined diploma seals (Community Service, Fine & Performing Arts, and Student Engagement). ....

Athletic trainers hired by United Local board | News, Sports, Jobs

HANOVERTON The United Local school board Wednesday night hired medical personnel to attend winter sport events.
The board hired Mollie Phillis, Megan Weyant and Susan Laughlin as athletic trainers for wrestling and boys and girls basketball at $20 per hour. Superintendent Lance Hostetler originally suggested capping the amount for athletic training at $2,500 for the season, but the board chose to leave the total indefinite based on how many events will require a trainer.
Hostetler said the district had no medical worker at the wrestling events last year and a student athlete suffered an injury that needed attention. He noted it will not always possible to have one of the trainers at the events. ....

Honoring veterans during holiday season | News, Sports, Jobs

Over 2,200 holiday wreaths were placed Sunday, Dec. 6 on the graves of veterans resting at Hope Cemetery in Salem. The well-attended event was part of Wreaths for Veterans which placed wreaths at local cemeteries including Ellsworth, Canfield Geeburg, Berlin Center West and North, Sebring Grandview, North Benton and Bunker Hill in addition to Hope Cemetery. Brown Funeral Home partnered with Wreaths for Veterans to bring the observance to Salem. Plans are for a similar ceremony next year at Grandview Cemetery. The Hope Cemetery observance included a posting of the colors by the Salem Honor Guard and a wreath dedication by branches of the miliary. AMVETS Commander Kevin Seguin was guest speaker.
