TEMPLE, TX — Knowing how a mental health crisis can tear a family apart personally, James Arnold, the director of adult mental health at Central Counties Services, was excited to partner with the Temple Police Department in the world-wide initiative, the One Mind Campaign.
“One week ago [was] the 15th anniversary of my brother’s suicide,” he explained. “So if we reach one person or 500 next year, it’s gonna be monumental not only to us but to the families and the person involved.” ....

During a very challenging era for policing, Mayor Ruthanne Fuller on Thursday said the city had found “the right person at the right time” to become the department’s new leader: Current Walpole Police Chief John F. Carmichael Jr.
If the City Council agrees with the mayor’s choice, Carmichael will take over for Interim Chief Howard Mintz in June.
“I’m very big on transparency,” said the 53-year-old father of two regarding his communication style with the community and media.
During a press conference at the police station, Fuller praised Carmichael, an East Walpole resident, for being a good listener, a collaborative manager and someone who leads with compassion and integrity, she said. ....

The effects of the COVID-19 pandemic have impacted all facets of life including mental health. Like local emergency room departments and private clinicians, local police departments have also seen a significant increase in mental health calls since March 2020.

Boxborough Police Chief Warren Ryder estimates a 30-40% increase in mental health-related calls during the pandemic compared with the previous year.
Maynard Police Chief Michael Noble said it is difficult to tally the exact number of mental health calls as they are called in and identified as several different incidents, perhaps as a disturbance, domestic dispute, or medical issue. The department s mental health referrals, however, are up 105% from the quarter before COVID.  ....
