FTSE 100 closed firmly in the red on Tuesday as coronavirus (COVID-19) fears continued to dampen investor sentiment, while the strong pound didn t help the internationalised share index.
Britain s blue-chip index finished down 140 points, or 2%, at 6,859. FTSE 250 also fell, shedding over 382 points, or 1.7%, at 22,108.
European markets have been hit hard today, with rising global coronavirus cases serving as a timely reminder that the pandemic is far from over despite recent vaccination progress, said Joshua Mahony, senior market analyst at trading group IG. ....

The main indices pulled back in New York, following the trend set by global markets
4:10pm: Traders sour on reopening plays 
The Dow ended Tuesday down 256 points, 0.75%, at 33,821. The Nasdaq dropped 129 points, 0.9%, to 13,786, and the S&P 500 dipped 28 points, 0.7%, to 4,135.
It was the second consecutive day of losses for the major indices, led by reopening plays including airline companies. The four major airlines all lost more than 3.5%.
The Boeing Company (NYSE:BA) saw its shares fall more than 4% to $234.19.
12:25pm: Airlines hit turbulence
The Dow was down 238 points, 0.7%, to 33,839 at midday. The Nasdaq Composite declined 126 points, 0.9%, to 13,789, and the S&P 500 slid 28 points, 0.7%, to 4,135.  ....
