MP SPEAKS | Malaysia needs a reset to halt its descent into a failed state Modified3:13 am MP SPEAKS | I agree. Malaysia is not yet a failed state but it is on the trajectory of becoming one, and Malaysians, regardless of race, religion, region or politics, must unite to save Malaysia from the fate of a failed state. Malaysia has failed to live up to the promises of Merdeka in 1957 and the formation of Malaysia in 1963 for the country to be an example and showcase to the troubled world how diverse races, languages, religions, cultures and civilisations could successfully coexist and integrate to build a united, harmonious, purposive, democratic, just, progressive and prosperous nation - a top world-class nation. ....
Malaysia’s giant United Malays National Organisation (Umno), which ruled for 61 years before losing power in the 2018 election, is at a crossroads as it struggles to regain its primacy as the dominant political force in the Malay-majority country. While Umno remains popular with Malay voters, the party is fractured, wracked with internal rivalries and has a party president who. ....
COMMENT | DAP s Chinese debate is larger than its party Modified2:35 am - COMMENT | Very few people in this country would have the privilege of being handpicked by Onn Jaafar to run as an election candidate. And no one but one woman could say that she has the privilege of being the first female elected official in the country - only Devaki Krishnan. “Onn wanted me to contest because I was a teacher and was known in my community,” she said. Devaki was popular in Brickfields, the constituency (Bangsar) she would contest. Every election that returned her as a winner saw her given a “princess reception” where she would stand and wave on an unhooded motorcade. ....
LETTER | Putrajaya must honour Onn Jaafar Modified3:33 am - LETTER | It is interesting that we now have a lively debate in certain informed circles on approaches to our history. More than fifty years ago with eminent historians like Wang Gungwu and RR Bonney we took the first steps towards writing a Malaysia-centric history after the earlier phase of Euro-centric history taught in our educational institutions. In the drive and the haste to achieve development and create new successes, we seem to have overlooked our nation’s own key founders. After more than twenty years of developing Putrajaya, our national administrative centre, there does not seem to be any single facility of note to honour Onn Jaafar. ....
YOURSAY | History’s ugly truth cannot be ‘fixed’ Modified4 Mar 2021, 12:09 am A PurpleJaguar0553: There was no BN, Umno, MIC or MCA during colonial times. It was the communists who fought against the British, who were the colonialists that divided this country and exploited our resources for their benefit. Tragically, the communists took the lives of Malaysians, including the police and army, in their misguided and warped thinking that the security forces were supporters of the British, which was not the case. The Malayan People’s Anti-Japanese Army (MPAJA) did fight against the cruel Japanese invaders who killed many Malaysians. These are facts and narrated as such. I don’t see any glorification in it (as per claims by Umno Youth chief Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki that the communists were glorified in the Form 4 History textbook). ....
