Credit: PA There will be 12 new members of the London Assembly this term following the conclusion of the GLA elections this weekend. Although none of the 14 constituency seats changed hands between parties, seven of the Assembly members in these seats stood down or retired before the election, with new candidates taking their place. There were also five new Assembly members elected to the London-wide seats who will join the re-elected Sian Berry, Caroline Pidgeon, Caroline Russell, Shaun Bailey, Andrew Boff and Susan Hall. Credit: PA/Newsquest The Conservative Party has held the London Assembly constituency seat of West Central, as the first election results roll in. The constituency had been earmarked as a potential swing seat for Labour, but Conservative Tony Devenish narrowly defeated Labour’s Rita Begum to retain the seat he won in 2016. But the Conservative Party’s majority has fallen dramatically, from 14,564 in 2016 to just 2,225 in this year’s election. Elsewhere, the Conservatives comfortably retained the constituency seat of Bexley and Bromley, with Peter Fortune to take over the seat vacated by MP Gareth Bacon, beating Labour candidate Stefano Borella with 97,966 votes to 47,389. ....
Dr Sahota won the contest with 85,216 votes, beating Stafford by a 8,242 margin. The incumbent Labour candidate, who has served Ealing and Hillingdon since 2012, said: “I’m really grateful for the privilege you’ve given me for serving another term at the London Assembly. “I also know this has been a very difficult campaign in unprecedented times in very difficult circumstances. And I want to thank all of the electorate who went out and used their vote. “I want to go back to the London Assembly to hold the Mayor to account, but I hope the Mayor will be Sadiq Khan, and I want to work with him to deliver a greener, a healthier city and a city that is prosperous and forward and recovers from the Covid-19 pandemic to deliver jobs, jobs and jobs for Londoners. ....
