To mark Earth Day, we ve rounded up seven materials that designers are using to replace more polluting mainstays such as plastic, concrete and leather in a bid to limit the impacts of climate change. With a recent study finding that human-made materials now outweigh the total mass of Earth s living biomass, designers are becoming increasingly aware of how the products they design impact the planet. From using renewable, carbon capturing materials such as cork, algae and latex to turning reclaimed food waste into food packaging, the focus is now on the entire lifecycle of a product. This includes how raw ingredients are sourced and how they can ultimately be reused, recycled or returned to nature once the product reaches the end of its life. ....

New York streetwear label Public School has collaborated with material scientist Theanne Schiros to create a pair of biofabricated trainers using a leather alternative grown by microbes. Almost the entire trainer, including the upper, midsole and laces, was produced from a symbiotic culture of bacteria and yeast (SCOBY), which is a key ingredient in making kombucha tea. Through fermentation, the SCOBY creates a leather substitute that has up to a 97 per cent lower carbon footprint than synthetic polyurethane (PU) leather, according to Schiros. The trainers are made from a microbial bio-leather The material scientist also found that while the bio-leather has a lifespan of several years, it remains backyard compostable and will break down over a couple of months in a domestic compost heap. ....
Fashion designer Phillip Lim has teamed up with industrial designer Charlotte McCurdy to create a petroleum-free dress covered in bioplastic sequins. Algae bioplastic fronds are sewn onto a biodegradable base layer made of plant fibres. This makes the dress free of crude-oil derivatives such as synthetic fibres, dyes and plastic sequins, which have recently come under fire for the pollution they cause. The dress is the result of a collaboration between Phillip Lim and Charlotte McCurdy Sustainability in fashion is not just about organic, natural or recycled textiles, McCurdy told Dezeen. If we re going to get to zero on our emissions, we need to be thinking about how to replace the 60 per cent of textiles that are currently made of fossil fuels. ....
