Special education update
School Committee members recently received an update from director of students services, Ruth Grube, on the special education programs and efforts underway in both districts. There are more than 800 students who live and attend Concord Public Schools and Concord Carlisle High School who have individual educational plans. Most students are in full or partial inclusion, with access to both the general education curriculum and general education peers.
Since conducting a comprehensive review of the special education approach in both districts in 2017, district leaders have added many programs to support students who require significant differentiation of the curriculum and additional assistance for them to access the curriculum. These programs have allowed more students to remain in the district to receive the services to support their individualized learning plan as opposed to attending out of district schools and prog ....

Committee advances project to schematic design
Members of the Concord Middle School Building Committee voted to adopt a revised space summary plan to advance the project to the schematic design phase at their business meeting on May 6.
The new space summary recommendation removed dedicated spaces for the maker space and alternate physical education space while increasing the size of the auditorium to 420 seats and revising the size of the gymnasium to accommodate two 74-foot basketball practice cross courts within the width required by the single Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association regulation sized main basketball court. The vote also included language which calls for a review of the building design to seek opportunities to simplify and lower total project cost. Space summary recommendations from the CMSBC Design Subcommittee accepted
Members of the Concord Middle School Building Committee voted unanimously to accept a space summary recommendation for the proposed new school building.
The proposal, developed by the CMSBC Design Subcommittee, supports the project’s educational plan, including appropriate academic spaces for the team model of education delivery. This approach enables teams of core content teachers to share the instruction for a group of students, enhancing social relationships, as well as interdisciplinary and cooperative learning. Delivering a new building that facilitates the team model was identified by teachers, administrators, as well as members of the School and Building Committees as a priority for the new building. A modified team approach is currently being utilized in the two existing middle school buildings. ....
