Obama vows not to ease up of Iceland whale hunting pressure | IceNews

US President Barack Obama has instructed officials to continue applying pressure on Iceland to comply with the whaling moratorium introduced by the International Whaling Commission (IWC) in 1986.
Obama, in a note to his cabinet officers, said senior delegations and officials meeting with the Icelandic government’s representatives should remind them that if the North Atlantic nation wants to cooperate with the US then it must change its policy on whaling.
The president’s memo comes just two months after Interior Secretary Sally Jewell released a statement expressing her concern over the fact Iceland continues to defy the IWC’s moratorium. Back in September 2011, Obama also said his cabinet should give the matter the “highest level of attention”. ....

Icelandic exchange participants in US to discuss non-lethal uses of whales | IceNews

A group of nine Icelandic museum and eco-tourism workers have travelled to the US to look at the economics, science and policy of the non-lethal uses of whales.
Earlier this month President Barack Obama’s government issued a memorandum to encourage the North Atlantic nation to come up with ways to take advantage of the economic opportunities available to it for the “non-lethal uses of whales” and bring an end to its commercial whaling.
The exchange team hope to return to their homeland with news ideas and strategies to educate Icelanders, work together with policymakers, grow their businesses and gain access to new markets. Later in the year, the US State Department is scheduled to host a virtual exchange event with Icelandic participants on conservation initiatives. ....
