Close to 250 participate in graduation ceremony Headlight staff reports SILVER CITY, N.M. – More than 350 students earned degrees from Western New Mexico University in spring 2021, and the Mustang community celebrated through a hybrid commencement ceremony on Friday afternoon. Of the graduates who received diplomas from WNMU this spring, about 250 chose to participate in the commencement ceremony, with 150 walking in person at Ben Altamirano Stadium and 97 turning their tassels over Zoom. The university awarded 37 associate degrees, 121 bachelor’s degrees, 152 master’s degrees, 68 graduate certificates, 10 applied technology certificates, six fast-track certificates, and five high school equivalency diplomas. Recognized as new inductees in the WNMU Student Hall of Fame were Taylor Allison, Kelli McGhiey, Harry O’Callaghan, Samantha Starr-Sullenger and Laruni Witty. ....

More than 350 students graduated this spring, with 150 choosing to participate in person and about 100 choosing to stay remote during the hybrid ceremony. The virtual ceremony was streamed live at wnmu.edu and on the university’s Facebook page. Opening the ceremony, WNMU President Joseph Shepard said to participants, “I salute you for your dedication to your courses and your perseverance.” He went on to honor members participants who have served in the U.S. Armed Forces and acknowledge the families who supported graduates along their educational journeys. “I’d like to recognize those who are the first in their families to receive a college degree. About 1 in 2 of our students are first generation college graduates,” Shepard said. President of the Associated Students of WNMU Brenda Hernandez, who also sang the national anthem at the start of the ceremony, addressed her fellow graduates. ....
Silver City, NM – During a virtual public meeting on Thursday, the Western New Mexico University Board of Regents made inquiries into student engagement through transitions in course delivery, discussed current and future programs, passed proposed changes to the student handbook, and approved a pair of financial documents. WNMU President Dr. Joseph Shepard reported that WNMU is maintaining its enrollment and budget well. While the state had originally been anticipating funding cuts up to 5% in fiscal year 2021-22, New Mexico is now looking at cuts up to just 2%. “From a budget perspective, from a finance and stability perspective, we’re as good as we can be,” he said. ....
