Above one of the existing Samskip container ships berthed at Belview, Port of Waterford. AFLOAT also adds the introduction of the larger capacity ship Edith, was recently observed, as the grey hulled ship was in Dublin Bay. Samskip s direct Ireland-Netherlands route realises advantages of border-free transit and new investments in container rail freight at both ends of the direct connection between EU member states.

In response to growing demand, Samskip has introduced a larger, faster containership, for its recently launched weekly container service between Dublin and Amsterdam by adding a call to the Port of Waterford.

A new weekly service sees Samskip launch today a new Dublin route connecting Irish businesses direct to importers and exporters via Amsterdam in the key European hinterland. The Dutch company with its headquarter in Rotterdam (route to Dublin too and other Irish ports) was in 1990 founded originally in Iceland. As reported by AFLOAT in 2017, it is in Icelandic waters where the former and final Galway-Aran Islands passenger/cargo ferry the Oileáin Árann operated. The 40m ferry also handled hoisted-vehicles, was sold by O’Brien Shipping in 2006 to Samskip and renamed Sæfari where it remains in service.
The Irish Road Hauliers Association (IRHA) has criticised the “excessive and unrelenting regulatory zeal” of authorities at Irish ports which they say will bring trade to a “complete stand still” and result in significant employment.
