IHRB hearing into controversial Rob James video to take place on Wednesday | Horse Racing News

The Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board (IHRB) hearing into a video of Cheltenham Festival-winning amateur rider Rob James mounting a dead horse in April 2016 will take place on Wednesday.
Just days after the image of trainer Gordon Elliott sitting on the ill-fated Morgan circulated on social media, former champion novice point-to-point rider James confirmed his identity in the separate video and issued an apology over the inappropriate and disrespectful act.
The IHRB confirmed last week an investigation into the matter was underway, but that has now concluded and the evidence will be presented before the referrals body.

Jockey in Ireland tests positive for Covid-19 in pre-Cheltenham Festival check | Horse Racing News

A Cheltenham Festival-bound jockey in Ireland has tested positive for Covid-19 but will have served his required self-isolation period in time to ride at next week s meeting, provided he tests negative before travelling to the UK.
A single rider among the more than 30 sampled in the second round of pre-Cheltenham testing returned a positive result for the virus, but the individual has no racing-related contacts, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board stated.
The jockey does not wish to be named and the regulator did not provide any details about his identity.
An IHRB spokesperson said: In preparation for the Cheltenham Festival, the IHRB has conducted a series of Covid-19 testing and one rider out of over 30 riders tested has returned a positive test at the second round of testing. ....

Disappointed but not completely disillusioned. That was the reaction of Gordon Elliott after dual Grand National hero Tiger Roll trailed home last of the six finishers behind Beacon Edge in the Ladbrokes Ireland Boyne Hurdle at Navan on Sunday.
There was no mention of the Grand National from Elliott afterwards – William Hill have pushed him all the way out to 25-1 for that – but the good news for his legions of fans is that the Glenfarclas Cross Country Chase remains very much part of the plan. You have certainly not seen the last of him.
Elliott said: It s still all systems go for Cheltenham. Keith [Donoghue] said he travelled well to the third-last but it was horrible ground and he just got tired. Of course I would have liked him to run better, but Keith said he hated the ground. ....

Byrnes suspension should serve as 'wake-up call' to trainers says IHRB chief | Horse Racing News

IHRB chief executive Denis Egan believes the six-month suspension handed to Charles Byrnes due to negligence in the Viking Hoard case should act as a wake-up call to trainers about leaving horses unattended at racecourses, warning that they could be penalised in future.
Speaking during a Zoom press conference after the appeals panel announced its verdict on Thursday, Egan suggested the saga would not have occurred if Byrnes had not left his horse alone on two occasions at Tramore in October 2018.
The reason we ended up with this particular case is because the trainer didn t do what he was supposed to do, he said. We did what we had to do, we dealt with the case that came up. ....
