The Irish Mansion in Greeneville, Tennessee.
William Dickson left County Antrim, Ireland at the age of 16 for a better life in Greeneville, Tennessee. He succeeded. By 1796, when he was 21, he was commissioned by President George Washington to be the town’s first postmaster, a lifetime appointment. He also amassed a considerable fortune as a merchant.
This mountainous region of northeast Tennessee was not easy to get to except along old Indian trails. It did have a good water source, known as “Big Spring,” but there is nothing to explain why the area was amenable to the Irish, or to merchants, who needed to ship goods in. They named an early road Irish Street, so they obviously worked it out. No matter the difficulty of the terrain, what the Irish settlers found was a vast improvement over cond ....

BBC trolling me through their use of Irish street sign: Bryson

BBC Northern Ireland has been accused of trolling loyalist activist Jamie Bryson over a picture used on an article about new Irish language signage in Belfast.
In its coverage about the council s decision to approve new bilingual street signs, they used a picture of Belfast s Bryson Street, with the Irish Sraid Ui Bhriosain below it.
The image has been used by BBC NI on several occasions in relation to stories on Irish language street signage.
Mr Bryson, who came to public attention during the Belfast flag protests in 2012, is a regular contributor to BBC Radio Ulster s Nolan Show.
He accused the corporation of engaging in some plausibly deniable trolling . ....

New free parking scheme in Allerdale introduced today

Allerdale s local authority-run car parks will be free to use after 3pm on the remaining Thursdays before Christmas, including today.
The move has been introduced by Allerdale Council in a bid to help encourage greater support of local businesses.
Free parking will be available this afternoon, next Thursday afternoon and the afternoon of Christmas Eve.
The initiative will be available in any council-owned car parks which are normally pay and stay. These are:
Workington: Udale Street, Ladies Walk, Elizabeth Street, Brow Top, Central Station, Allerdale House and Workington MSCP
Cockermouth: Fairfield, Bitterbeck, Memorial Gardens, Sullart Street and Riverside ....
