Iowa Senate approves bill banning concepts in diversity training


That the U.S. or state of Iowa is fundamentally or systemically racist or sexist.
That an individual, by virtue of the individual s race or sex, is inherently racist, sexist, or oppressive, whether consciously or unconsciously.  
That anyone should feel discomfort, guilt, anguish or any other form of psychological distress because of their race or sex.
The bill would still allow a provider of diversity training to respond to questions on those topics and wouldn t prohibit discussions as part of a larger course of academic instruction. An amendment that the Senate adopted Wednesday would also specify that the bill doesn t prevent curricula that teach on topics like sexism, slavery, racial oppression or racial discrimination.  ....

Union rejects Iowa plan for investigating Anamosa penitentiary attack

In a move that fell short of satisfying a union call for an independent review, Iowa corrections officials have brought in investigators from two neighboring states to probe the March killings of two Anamosa State Penitentiary workers.
A team of six investigators from the Minnesota and South Dakota corrections departments arrived in Anamosa this week to begin probing the March 23 slayings of correctional officer Robert McFarland and registered nurse Lorena Schulte, Iowa Department of Corrections spokesman Cord Overton said Thursday.
State officials have charged two inmates in the killings, which they say occurred when the pair, members of a prison work detail, were staging an escape attempt using hammers and a grinder obtained from a tool shed. ....
