Warner Middle School levy passes XENIA Xenia will be getting a new middle school. By 194 votes, residents in the school district unofficially approved a 2.3-mill property tax levy will raise $36.2 million to allow the district to replace the aging Warner Middle School building. It will cost the owner of a $100,000 home $6.71 per month according to district officials. The unofficial results released by the Greene County Board of Elections show 2,142 voted for the levy and 1,948 voted against. Voters in the district also approved the renewal of a permanent improvement levy, 2,483-1,615. The 1.3-mill PI levy, which raises $450,000 annually costs the owner of a $100,000 home $13.16 per year and is not a new tax. ....

Two finalists have been named in the search for a new principal at Mills Lawn Elementary School. The school district announced earlier this week that a 12-member interview committee had selected Cheryl Lowe, a fifth-grade teacher at the school, and Megan Winston, an assistant principal at Xenia High School, as the top candidates. Each candidate is scheduled to give public presentations and answer community members’ questions this week, with Lowe up first Wednesday, May 5, and Winston following on Thursday, May 6. Both events will be livestreamed and posted online on the district’s YouTube channel. District Superintendent Terri Holden said she anticipates making a hiring recommendation at the next school board meeting Thursday, May 13. ....

Xenia native receives promotion with the Navy Schafer XENIA Todd Schafer’s civilian career with the Navy took another step forward. The Xenia native was named the acting assistant secretary of the Navy (Energy, Installations and Environment) in January. In his new position, Schafer will be the principal advisor to the Secretary of the Navy on delivering fleet readiness and combat lethality through modernized shore infrastructure and test and training ranges. “I have the wonderful opportunity to be in this position to help reinforce the Navy’s dedication to energy security, and put focus on our impact to the environment and installation resiliency,” Schafer said. “In this job, my team and I balance the many requirements for DON’s readiness with our responsibility to good stewardship.” ....
