Explorers who lost their lives more than a century ago to be honoured in Hobart memorial

Bronze plaques honouring two men lost in the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911-14 have been unveiled at Mawson s Place in Hobart.
More than a century after perishing in Antarctica, two expeditioners who ventured south in the name of science have been remembered in Hobart.
British Army officer Lieutenant Belgrave Edward Ninnis and Swiss mountaineer Dr Xavier Guillaume Mertz were part of the 1911-14 Australasian Antarctic Expedition.
They were about 500 kilometres east of their Cape Denison base alongside party leader Sir Douglas Mawson when tragedy struck on December 14, 1912.
Ninnis disappeared down a crevasse, taking with him a team of six huskies and most of the party s supplies. ....

Stories from South: Outback Aviator

SA Tourism travel blog
Meet Doug Sprigg, an outback pilot who spends his days flying over the wild frontiers of his backyard, the vast South Australian outback. His flight path covers 800,000 square kilometres, an area bigger than Belgium, Netherlands and France combined. The 66-year-old runs and lives at Arkaroola Wilderness Sanctuary in the farthest reaches of the Flinders Ranges and says it’s craggy peeks, towering ridgelines and sweeping gorges are best explored from the air.
A diesel mechanic and pilot by trade, and historian, geologist, and biologist in knowledge alone, for 30 years, he’s taken to the sky to share his love for Arkaroola. Out here, there’s no traffic control, flight attendants or flight service. It’s Doug, his Cessna 207, a 650-metre airstrip, and some of the most pristine and untouched country left in Australia. It’s a place for those who want a little more. ....

Today, 5 May, is the birthday of Sir Douglas Mawson, the Australian geologist best known for his Antarctic explorations. He undertook multiple expeditions to the frozen south, including leading the Australasian Antarctic Expedition of 1911–14, which was not just geared towards exploration but also scientific research.
But Mawson’s long career wasn’t entirely focused on the polar regions.
Cosmos chatted to Mark Pharoah, Senior Collections Manager at the South Australian Museum, to find out what we know about Mawson’s research closer to home. ....
