Foxconn revenues up 44% on iPhone demand, working from home

Foxconn parent company Hon Hai earned $47 billion in the first quarter of 2021, up 44% from last year, reportedly on demand from home workers buying iPhone 12 models.
Following its January sales record based on demand for the iPhone 12 range, Foxconn s parent company Hon Hai Precision Industry, has seen 44% growth since the same time last year.
According to
Bloomberg, the growth described in the Taiwanese manufacturer s latest earnings report, is down to demand for Apple s 5G devices, and working from home caused by the coronavirus.
The 44% rise does come one year after Foxconn reported a severe profit drop because of COVID-related issues. However, this latest quarter saw it earning $47 billion. Its March sales alone were approximately $15.43 billion. ....

Future iPhones may predict when a battery will run out, give early warning

Apple plans to have your iPhone predict far in advance if you re going to run out of charge today, and warn you in time to do something about it.
Just as every iPhone runs out of battery power, so every iPhone has always had the ability to warn when that power is getting low. It s more complicated than the little icon and notifications would make it seem, but still it is a familiar experience of using an iPhone. And Apple wants to improve it.
Smart advice to charge notification, is a newly-granted patent that is not concerned with prolonging battery life through some chemistry or physics. Instead, it s about accepting the fact we ll run out of battery power, and trying to minimize the inconvenience. ....

Apple researching a faster way to correct typing mistakes

Rather than just spotting whole mistyped words, Apple wants iOS to figure out which letters are wrong, delete those on the fly with little user intervention, and keep the right ones.
It s 15 years now since Apple designer Ken Kocienda invented what would become the iPhone s on-screen keyboard. Apple has since refined it with features such as Slide to Type, and it has been filing patent after patent on autocorrection ideas. Now it s been granted yet another patent, and this one is about speeding up how we deal with typing mistakes.
Intelligently deleting back to a typographical error, is not concerned with the usual issue over spotting a mistake as you type it, although that is part of this. Currently, if you make a mistake then you can tap Delete several times to remove each letter. ....

Jason Sudeikis wins Screen Actors Guild award for 'Ted Lasso'

Apple TV+ hit Ted Lasso continues to add awards, with star and co-writer Jason Sudeikis now picking up the Screen Actors Guild s comedy series acting trophy.
Adding to its slew of awards to date including Critics Choice and Writers Guild wins Ted Lasso has now added a further acting award for star and co-writer Jason Sudeikis at the SAG Awards 2021.
Sudeikis won for Outstanding Performance by a Male Actor in a Comedy Series, beating Nicholas Hoult for The Great, Ramy Youssef for Ramy, and both Daniel Levy and Eugene Levy for Schitt s Creek.

Supreme Court rules in favor of Google in Oracle Java fight

The US Supreme Court has sided with Google in the search company s long-running legal fight with Oracle, declaring Android could use APIs from the Oracle-owned Java.
In Monday s ruling, based on arguments from October 2020, the Supreme Court decided that Google s use of API code from Java was fair use. The decision, which effectively overrules an earlier federal ruling that Google infringed on the code, allowing the search company to escape paying potentially billions to Oracle.
Google was accused of copying roughly 11,500 lines of code from Java SE s API for use in its development of Android as a mobile platform. Oracle believed this was an infringement of its copyright, prompting lawsuits. ....
