Norwalk looks to roundabouts, restores beach intersection to prior plan

NORWALK, Conn. Roundabouts may be coming to Norwalk and a “confusing” change made quietly by the Department of Transportation, Mobility, and Parking near the beach is being reversed.
The Norwalk Traffic Authority voted Monday to remove yield signs installed at Gregory Boulevard intersection with Fifth Street installed by TMP in November. Mayor Harry Rilling said removing them was a recommendation made by newly hired Director of Transportation, Mobility, and Parking James Travers.
“There’s a yield sign, probably about 15 feet in from Fifth Street on Gregory Boulevard, which is very, very confusing. It almost looks like the traffic is supposed to yield to traffic on Fifth Street, which has a stop sign. I don’t think that’s a proper signage there,” said Rilling. ....

A Vancouver Barracks mule train returns from the Lacamas Creek artillery range (renamed Camp Bonneville in 1909) along the city streets around 1908. The convoy heads down 10th Street (now Evergreen Boulevard) toward the barracks packing ammunition. The troopers belong to the U.S. Army Mountain Gun Battery, 2nd Field Artillery Regiment stationed here between 1904 and 1913. Contrary to Hollywood’s horsey version of the West, mules played a big role. Gen. George Crook preferred riding a mule, so did William “Buffalo Bill” Cody and Gen. O. O. Howard. Perhaps filmmakers assumed soldiers, cowboys, gunslingers and lawmen looked more formidable straddling horses instead o ....

In April 1862 James Andrews and a group of Union volunteers stole the Western and Atlantic train at Big Shanty (Kennesaw) and planned to take the train north to Chattanooga and then to Huntsville, Alabama to Union General Ormsby Mitchel.  A secondary goal was to burn railroad bridges, wreck rails and cut off a vital communication link.
Said event has been memorialized in movies and written accounts but the treatment that James Andrews and a group of Union soldiers in the Chattanooga privately owned jail of John Swaim sometimes described as Swaim’s jail has received little attention.  Swaim’s Jail played an important part in the “Great Locomotive Chase” that is the story of Andrew’s Union Raiders that is also an important part of the history of the General locomotive by disguised Federal soldiers. ....

Karla Seaberg and Lisa Gillund counted out bundles of packaged meals being distributed to Marshall area residents on Thursday afternoon. Thanks to a COVID-19 relief grant, Lutheran Social Service has been able to host free meal giveaways in several area communities. A total of 1,500 meal packages - enough for 300 people - were distributed in Marshall.
MARSHALL  A good meal is one of our most basic needs. And as workers from Lutheran Social Service have traveled around southern Minnesota over the past couple of months, they’ve found that plenty of people may not be sure where their next meal is coming from. ....
