House Resolution 33 created the working group, as a result of an independent report s findings criticizing the University of Hawaiʻi, the leaseholder of the mountain. The report was critical of UH for not adequately reaching out to the Native Hawaiian community for its oversight of Mauna Kea. It also acknowledged Mauna Kea is one of the best managed and protected lands in the state.
The university responded to the report, saying it recognizes the report s criticisms and it is reviewing and taking steps to improve its engagement with the Native Hawaiian community.
The working group is comprised of state lawmakers, representatives from the public and private sector, and those nominated by Native Hawaiian groups and organizations. Saiki says 58 people were nominated for seven spots to represent the interests of Native Hawaiians.

Honolulu Mayor Rick Blangiardi outlined plans to reduce homelessness, work with private landowners to boost affordable housing and close the $3 billion shortfall on the city’s long-overdue and over-budget rail project in a speech March 15.
The former television executive and coach, who takes pride in not being a career politician, kept his talk tight. The speech ran nine pages, about a third of it devoted to the city’s new leadership team and employees. At under 22 minutes, it’s likely the shortest edition of the speech since the tradition began. Then-Mayor Jeremy Harris delivered the first one in 1994. Similar to his campaign, Blangiardi focused more on ideas rather than specific details about major policy changes and initiatives.

The Pali and West Loch golf courses will be open from 7 a.m. to 11 a.m. for 18-hole play and 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. for 9-hole play. Kahuku Golf Course will be open from 7 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Refuse will not be collected. For homes with the green, recycle and refuse pickup bins, collection will occur during the next two days. Leave your gray refuse bin at the curb but hold on to your green waste and recyclables until the next regularly scheduled pickup.
