GUWAHATI: Writer, journalist and retired IAS officer Jyoti Prasad Saikia passed away at his Chandmari residence here at 7.55 this morning. He was 75.
In 1970, Late Saikia was the Agartala correspondent of the Times of India, and he did cover the Bangladesh Liberation War. Later, he was awarded by the Bangladesh government after attaining independence.
Late Saikia was a direct nominated IAS officer because of his excellent performance. He did hold the post of Director, Directorate of Information and Public Relations, Assam. He also held posts like Commissioner Secretary, Personnel and Home Secretary.
It was Jyoti Prasad Saikia who had coined the phrase Seven Sisters for the seven northeastern states in his work The Land of Seven Sisters . After his superannuation, he was the Editor of Dainik Asam for four years. He had command over three languages – English, Assamese and Bengali. He was the author of most of the slogans on the State governm ....
